Tennessee Guidelines for Child Support

Tennessee Child Support GuidelinesTennessee Child Support Guidelines | Turner Law Offices, P.C.

The Tennessee Child Support Guidelines are comprised of sixty nine (69) pages of rules and regulations developed by the Tennessee Department of Human Services (DHS).  Title IV-D of the Federal Social Security Act requires that each state establish guidelines for setting and modifying child support; the Tennessee Child Support Guidelines are the direct result of this federal act.  The Tennessee Child Support Guidelines are merely the implementation of federal law.  The Tennessee Child Support Guidelines are mandatory, and must be followed by the Courts and administrative agencies.  The implementation of the Tennessee Child Support Guidelines took away the ability of the judge to set reasonable support; the Guidelines create a rebuttable presumption that the amount of child support set under the Guidelines is correct.

Tennessee Child Support Factors

Courts set child support in Tennessee.  Generally speaking, the Tennessee Child Support Guidelines take into consideration the following factors in determining child support, and amounts using these factors are input into the Tennessee Child Support Calculator:

  • Number of days child is with each parent
  • Income of each parent
  • Work-related daycare costs
  • Cost of health insurance
  • Other children in/out of each parent’s household
