Only 8 Survive A 50-person Bus Accident in France
At least 42 are dead, five are injured and three are safe in a head-on collision between a timber truck and a passenger bus in southern France Friday morning. The truck and bus collided on a narrow, country road near Bordeaux, France then caught fire, leaving both vehicles blackened. The truck driver was killed, but the bus driver survived. While anticipating the crash, the bus driver opened up the bus doors so people could escape. Most of the bus’ passengers were elderly citizens who were on a club trip. French President Francois Hollande is calling the wreck its worst automobile accident in years and described it as a “tragedy.”
How It Happened
The bus driver reportedly lost control on what locals call a notoriously dangerous bend on a narrow road. Losing control around the bend, the bus found itself in the middle of the road with the truck oncoming. At this point, the collision was unavoidable, and the bus driver threw the doors open to get people off the bus. The bus driver was among the eight that survived. It is unclear how fast the vehicles were going at the time.
