Eric Andre Show Co-host Kicks Flavor Flav in the Face

flavor flav sits on the set of the eric andre showEver seen The Eric Andre Show? Check it out. It’s basically a cosmetically low-budget talk show (think public access television) where host Eric Andre tries his best to freak out guests and keep his audience surprised. Maybe cockroaches suddenly start flooding out of the coffee mug on Eric’s desk. Maybe some naked guy appears and sticks his penis into a jar of pasta sauce. Maybe co-host Hannibal Buress does a segment on various brands of pretzel sticks. You never know.

Guests on the show vary from high-profile celebrities to no-profile people pretending to be celebrities. “Beyonce and Jay-Z” have “been on the show” a couple of times. “Reese Witherspoon” has been a few episodes as well, usually to perform with “her” spoon music. The list of fake guest appearances goes on.

As the show has gained traction among a growing demographic of weirdos, however, they’ve perhaps made enough money to consistently bring out real, actual celebrities. The best part about this is that, most of the time, these guests don’t seem to know what they’re getting into when they appear for an interview. People often walk out when things get too weird. There are two types of celebrities who appear on The Eric Andre Show: those who come prepared to engage in fuckery, and those do not come prepared at all. We can probably assume that the latter crowd has never watched the show and are simply following their agents’ press schedule.

When Flavor Flav walked on stage in one of the most recent episodes, it was unclear which category of celebrity he represented. He was, of course, dressed to the nines in a snow-white three-piece suit, complete with matching top hat and humungous clock necklace. One could reasonably suspect that an eccentric guy like Flavor Flav probably knows eccentric stuff when he gets into it.

But maybe not.

About a minute after Flav sat down, a stagehand approached him to try and fix his allegedly malfunctioning mic. Instead, he grabs his penis. Flavor Flav said to not do that unless he wanted to start fighting. Then Eric Andre stood up to go for a grab. Flavor Flav said he’d punch him in the face. Finally, Andre knocked over his desk to reveal a bathtub filled with cold water, got completely naked, and slipped in (much to Flav’s surprise).

“This show sucks, man,” said Hannibal.

“Yeah, man.” said Flav, just as Hannibal rears back to deliver a very real-looking kick to his face.

That’s all for Flav, folks! Based on the aftermath and the way Eric Andre runs his show, it’s doubtful that the kick was “scripted” in the sense that Flav knew it was coming. According to Flav in a pissed-off tweet, it didn’t even happen:

“People asking about that B.S. Eric Andre show. That kick in the face, NEVER HAPPENED. That’s some Bullshit editing done to disparage Flav. You Eric Andre — FUCK YOU for that move gee – Flavor Flav”

Whether he’s right or not, it doesn’t really matter. The kick looked real, and since Flav is so miffed, it might as well’ve been.

Simple assault, anyone?

From a legal perspective, it’s an interesting sketch. If Hannibal really did kick Flavor Flav in the face, is he legally protected? Can Flav press charges? Probably this all depends on the contract or release or whatever Flav signed before coming on the show. But as far as assault goes, kicking someone in the face definitely counts.

According to Tennessee state law, simple assault (in the context of a kick to the face) occurs when the offender “intentionally or knowingly causes physical contact with another and a reasonable person would regard the contact as extremely offensive or provocative.” Yep, that sure sounds like a kick to the face.

It doesn’t look like Flavor Flav is pressing charges, which makes sense considering his “that never happened” stance. But that’s his call.
